Why I’m taking part in #libday8
I’ve not taken part in the last couple of Library Day in the Life rounds for various reasons, namely being a library school student with no job makes for less interesting reading as it doesn’t give an insight into much of interest. I’m not sure many people want to read about the life of a student, which for me last year mainly involved sitting in the library stressing over essays.
This time however I have a new(ish) job so there are lots of benefits to participation in #libday8
- Reflection: My job is still fairly new (coming up to the 4 month milestone now which doesn’t seem long but as I’m only on a 6 month contract I’m over halfway through) so I’m still learning every day, #libday8 is the perfect opportunity to realise how much I do learn at work over the course of a week. Of course over the last 4 months many things have become routine in my job so #libday8 is also a great opportunity to take stock of what my job involves and of the skills and expertise I have.
- Sharing: As a media librarian working for a television producer and broadcaster my role is fairly unique and perhaps not something many people know much about. I certainly had no idea what library and information roles existed within television before I started this role so #libday8 is my chance to share with others a bit more about my working life.
- Motivation: January has been a long and dark month. It has been hard to find the motivation to get engaged and inspired, particularly in terms of the blog. There is nothing worse than a neglected blog, especially one which is listed on your CV, so #libday8 is a chance to get back into the habit of setting time aside outside of work to blog.
I’m undecided about the best format to write my #libday8 entries up in yet. A running narrative of my days is the obvious way but depending on the activities of the day I might experiment with the writing style. I suppose it is impossible to say until I know what each day will hold. I’ve been jotting down notes during the day this week and will write up when I get chance.
Why are others taking part in #libday8 and how are you documenting your day?

Hi Theatregrad…
I think it’s absolutely fabulous that you are working as a Media Librarian. I bet you have a niche for memorizing hard, quick facts, and the ability to think on your feet in a fast-paced environment. As for my #libday8 reflections, I have two different jobs, plus finishing up my MLS part-time. The beauty of the #libday project is that you can create a blog post that captures the imagination of your audience. My first job is more routine so I did a timeline. My second (forthcoming) post will be a summary and highlights of working cirulation/reference desk at a private university. I took more liberties in my second post to add pictures. But everyone is different. I say choose these posts as a way to tell others…why they SHOULD BECOME a librarian. I would not have it any other way. Cheers to you and I am looking forward to reading your reflections. GG
